What Is a Compressed Air Usage Calculator?

A compressed air usage calculator adds up the air consumption of every tool and machine on your site, in cubic feet per minute (CFM) or litres per second, then applies a utilisation factor and safety margin to recommend the compressor size you actually need. It exists to prevent the two most expensive sizing mistakes: an undersized compressor that starves tools and stalls production, and an oversized one that wastes energy every hour it runs.

How the Calculation Works

  1. Each tool has an average consumption figure, measured at 6 to 7 bar with intermittent use already factored in.
  2. Your total connected demand is multiplied by a utilisation factor, because not every tool runs at once.
  3. A 25% safety margin is added on top, covering leaks, pressure drop, and demand spikes.
  4. The result maps to a recommended compressor output and power band.

Why Sizing Matters

An undersized compressor runs flat out, overheats, and cannot hold pressure, so tools underperform and the machine wears out early. An oversized fixed speed compressor spends much of its life idling offload, and offload running still burns 20 to 30% of full load power.
